Myth - Tooth Disease Can Be Transmitted From Somebody to You

Tooth decay is caused by bacteria that proliferate when there is a lot of sugar for them feed upon. This kind of bacteria isn't present at birth, rather it is caught from adults.
You have this bacteria if you have had any kind of cavity. By sharing your child's utensils or wiping her face with a little of your saliva, you probably have given your child these cavity causing bacteria.
It's true, that eventually all children will have these oral germs, but babies who have these bacteria are more likely to have a life-long challenge with tooth decay. If you haven't had a cavity since your teens, then you may have a low bacteria count and are less likely to pass them on to your child. It doesn't hurt to still take preventative measures.
Don't let your child put his fingers in your mouth and refrain from using the same utensil as he is using. For fast clean ups, use a wet wipe, not the spit and shine technique.
Even if you haven't given these germs to your child, it's good to realize that tooth decay has been more of a problem more common than asthma, diabetes and childhood obesity.
What are the causes, then? Let's look at this a little further. Processed foods and sugary drinks are a large contributor as to why kids are eating so poorly today. The water they drink doesn't have fluoride because it comes from a bottle, not the tap. They have more tooth enamel erosion because they are drinking too many sodas and drinks with a lot of acidity.
There is a way to help your children from getting cavities. Twice a year you need to get them to a dentist for teeth cleanings. Be sure to have the hygienist apply fluoride to help combat weak spots on the teeth. Keep a close eye on how many carbs and how much sugar they consume. To help offset the affects of acid, have your child eat cheese or drink milk after their meals. Chewing sugar free gum with Xylitol after a meal can help stimulate saliva. Buying new toothbrushes every three months or so and brushing with a toothpaste that contains fluoride twice a day are very important.
With these great tips in mind, you and your child can make your next visit the dentist a cavity free one.
